Is Andrew Breitbart coming to take us down?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Breitbart, editor for the Drudge Report and a media figure in his own right, confronted Max Blumenthal at CPAC over Blumenthal’s article on James O’Keefe (summary: the dude who spied on ACORN maybe is somewhat of a white nationalist).

Breitbart’s not done yet.  He is having so much fun he now wants to take down the “institutional left,” and he believes this will happen “within the next three weeks”:

He might be referring to his appearance on former Congressman (and radio personality!) Ernest Istook’s Harvard Institute of Politics study group, “Propaganda in American Politics.”  Breitbart is scheduled to be a guest speaker next week, which falls within the deadline he gave on a Fox News show that attracts more viewers at 3AM than CNN at 8PM.

This is a must-not-miss event.  What better way to take down the institutional left than to corrupt influence the minds of young Harvard intellectuals who will lead the institutions?  It worked for Peggy Noonan.

(EDIT:  Didn’t happen.  Some anti-global warming guy came instead.  The institutional left survives.)

I’m going to venture a speculation

…that the recent election in Iran was in fact not subjected to massive fraud, and Mahmoud did actually get the votes of ~60% of the people over there. This isn’t to say that their “democratic” system is free or fair in any sense, but there’s pretty much no evidence, as far as I can see in the usual Western mainstream media, that measures up to the scale of fraud that some people suppose to have taken place.

Even if the other guy won, nothing would have really changed—even all the so-called “discontent” on the part of the educated urban citizenry and the various reports of violent protests are strategically worthless, because none of this is really translating to any significant loss of legitimacy for the regime as a whole. All the talk before the election about how a Mousavi win could mean a thawing of tensions was just wishful thinking anyway.

So it’s at least a comfort to see the U.S. government basically sit down and shut up about it (well, be as quiet as Washington can possibly be about anything) for the time being. People outside Iran who are walking around and alleging fraud are doing it wrong. The last thing you want to do is look like you’re trying to undermine Iran’s government domestically; only a regime that feels safe at home can be convinced that they can afford to negotiate, make some consessions, etc.

Iraqi throws shoes at Bush

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

He must be giving Bush the Saddam treatment.  Little does he know that in America throwing shoes at someone is the highest sign of respect.

“Black cat, white cat, what matters is whether it catches the mouse”?

Despite the Bush administration’s persistence it is still not generally recognized as a principle of international law that terrorists are hostis humani generis—enemies of humanity that do not enjoy the protection of any laws whatsoever—and this special status continues to be reserved for pirates and slavers.

So presumably Somalia’s Islamist fighters are a step up from pirates. Or perhaps the Saudi policy of making sure to have plenty of terrorists bought and paid for is returning some dividend, at least seemingly so. [CNN]

Running the names “obama” and “jesus” through Google Fight reveals that they have the same number of searches.  Coincidence?  We think not. [CNN, Google Fight]

Terrorism DVD also spotted at Harvard

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Harvard Square is always full of activists of all colors, peddling their wares, from the Tibetans to the LaRouche kids to that 9/11 Truth guy. Yesterday was no exception, and the Obama Youth were busily proselytizing in Harvard Square—and right beside them were some people, handing this out for free:

At least some 28 million copies of this movie, produced by an Israeli filmmaker, have been distributed throught key battleground states as well as other parts of the country such as Cambridge, MA. [CNN, Washington Post]

Who dick bigger? Part II

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

We wrote recently about the “my building is bigger than yours” war between Saudi Arabia and Dubai.  Now Moody’s Investors Service reports that Dubai may need help from Abu Dhabi to finance the borrowing that led to, among other things, the construction of the Burj Dubai, their first record-breaking unnecessary skyscraper.  Dubai promptly denied the allegations, of course. [Bloomberg]

All things considered, this is the market equivalent of taking Viagra and trying to hide it.

Who dick bigger?

Monday, October 13th, 2008

A Saudi Arabian prince announces plans to spend 26.7 billion dollars to build the tallest building in the world, over 1 km high. Not to be outdone, Dubai, which currently holds the record, also says they plan the same. [CNN]

Look here, this is getting a little insane. There hasn’t been some sort of a major materials engineering breakthrough. What has happened is a massive accumulation of capital in the hands of a few people that collect rent on minerals extraction.

But this is at least a whole order of magnitude smaller than the amount of capital that Americans burned on housing. Three hundred million idiots are better than one.
